The Jimmie Johnson Foundation Announces Over $450,000 in Champions Grants
Rocky River High School one of eighteen K-12 public schools to receive funding

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (December 15, 2022)

The Jimmie Johnson Foundation (JJF) announced today that 18 school projects in North Carolina will receive $468,462.47 in Champions Grants. The grants are awarded annually to K-12 public and charter schools to help them address critical needs and this year will benefit more than 11,000 North Carolina students. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to establish the first data science center at Rocky River High School and at the high school level in the state of North Carolina” stated Principal Kwame Stith.

Rocky River High School will receive $25,000 to create the Center for Future Data Scientists in their Media Center. In conjunction with Rocky River’s Career and Technical Education pathways and Informational Technology NAF Academy, students at Rocky River will have a unique and one of a kind opportunity through our Data Science Center preparing them to be competitive in an ever changing and advancing job market. Biology and AP Statistics students will also use the lab for research and an introduction to bioinformatics.

“It’s important that we continue to support K-12 public education,” said Jimmie Johnson, co-founder of the Jimmie Johnson Foundation. “Chani and I both grew up in the public school system and know how important it is to have access to technology, STEM programming, wellness, arts and libraries that have relevant and up to date books. Schools need help more than ever and the JJF has funded some incredibly impactful programs over the years. I can’t wait to see what the schools do with these grants.”

Since 2009, over $6.8 million has been contributed through the Jimmie Johnson Foundation Champions Grant program to K-12 public schools to fund projects with the potential for high impact and significant positive change.
